Ann Trinkle
and see Ann Trinkle's amazing works!
Through the use of mundane materials, found and manipulated, Ann Trinkle is interested in creating forms that evoke contemplation beyond the work itself. Her work resists prosaic interpretation and instead functions as physical poetry defined and formed by the viewer's own experiences.
Trinkle received her M.F.A. from VCU and B.A. from Randolph Macon Women's College. She has exhibited most recently at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Indiana, and the the Flood Fine Art Center in Asheville, NC. |

South Roanoke Artists
Artist, Calvert Lafollette
One of the most interesting stops along the South Roanoke side of the tour, is the studio of Calvert Lafollette. Stop by and see what beauty he has created.
My work examines both flora and fauna. I explore their similarities and differences and blur the line between the two. These studies could be creatures of an earlier evolutionary scale or future genetic mishaps. Every image is contained or trapped within a defined space, making the whole piece more direct and iconic. This defines and documents each image and its possible existence.

Guest Artist, John Reburn
Also new to the tour this year, as guest, John Reburn!
I love honoring the labor and elegance of past traditions. My printmaking is a union of art, historical traditions and modern design. With the commonality of computers, we forget the origins of type and how images are created. Silkscreen and Letterpress are antique printing processes and have roots that go back five-hundred years or more.
I have been a working artist for nearly 30 years. Specializing in printmaking and design, I have worked in Los Angeles for entertainment companies including Disney and NBC; non-profit organizations such as Bet Tzedek, the Larry King Foundation and the Tiger Woods Foundation; and I've designed posters for broadway theatrical productions, musicians, and live concert venues. But, mostly I enjoy how these primitive methods of printmaking are as challenging as they are relevant and rewarding. My Roanoke studio is my favorite studio that I have ever assembled...I am excited to share it with you.

Strong sunlight and cast shadows are often the inspiration for my artwork. My paintings are a response to the pattern, shape, texture and line observed in the world around me. In composing my subject I zoom in for a close-up view. And whether rendering trains, chairs or flowers I leave out as much or more of the subject as I paint. The viewer is invited to enjoy the artwork and fill in the missing piece.
Brief History
I am an artist more by happenstance than by training. I did not heed my mother's advice to go to art school. Instead, I attended Lafayette College, in the first co-ed class, and then the University of Virginia where I received a Masters degree in Special Education. Fifteen years later, after teaching in public and private institutions and after the birth of my third child, I took a watercolor class with Kay Flory. Kay was challenging yet kind and she introduced me to an art world full of possibilities.
Since then I have taken many workshops, traveled with fellow artists, read lots of books and magazine articles and spent countless hours in the studio. Artists I have studied with include: Carole Barnes, Carrie Brown, Judy Betts, Miles Batt, Mary Todd Beam, Mary Ann Beckwith, Gerald Brommer, Pat Dews, Jean Grastorf, Karlyn Holman, George James, Carla O'Connor, Morris Shubin, John Salminen, Janet Walsh and Donna Zagotta.
The evolution of my painting style and subject matter has been shaped by life events and contact with several individuals. For me, making art is truly a process, an exciting, challenging journey that has filled my life with friendships and peace.
Guest, Cathryn Hankla 2012
My paintings are experiments in pattern and color. Geometric shapes, musical, or mathematical forms influence their structures, even when the surfaces appear freer. ![]() With palettes and patterns drawn from the natural world, cloth swatches, or symbolism, each painting represents a meditation of slow labor, an inner sanctum. |
